Biography

The world as a stage,
art as a destiny.

"Few mezzosopranos alive today move between the seduction of Dalila and the fury of Amneris as convincingly as Herrera does."

Born in Caracas to Canarian parents and raised in the Canary Islands, Nancy Fabiola Herrera trained in Madrid before continuing her studies at the Juilliard School and the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. Over more than three decades on the world's leading stages (the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Arena di Verona, Sydney Opera House, Deutsche Oper Berlin, New National Theatre Tokyo and Los Angeles Opera among them), she has brought more than sixty-five roles to life, establishing herself as one of the defining Carmens of her generation.

Celebrated for the emotional honesty she brings to every role, she has been honoured with the Plácido Domingo Award from Los Angeles Opera and the Pepita Embil Award at Operalia, among many other distinctions. Recent milestones include her return to the Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires as Herodias in Salome, a return to the Metropolitan Opera in Andrea Chénier, and a Grammy nomination for Florencia en el Amazonas. “I can only reach people's hearts if I honestly live, in the first person, the story I want to tell,” says Nancy, a philosophy that shapes both her performances and her teaching, from masterclasses at Juilliard to La Voz Consciente, the integral training programme for singers and musicians she is launching now.

Everything I know,
passed forward.

"After twenty-five years and fifty roles, the most valuable thing I can offer the next generation isn't a masterclass. It's everything it actually takes to walk onto that stage and mean it."

01

Craft

Technique the way I actually use it, not the way it reads in a textbook. Breath, placement, and the daily discipline that makes a voice sound effortless when it almost never is.

02

Preparation

How to build a role from the page. What the score doesn't tell you. The language work, the research, the choices that turn a character into someone an audience believes.

03

Presence

What holds it together once the lights come up. The part of singing that has nothing to do with the voice, and everything to do with who you are the moment you walk out there.
